Stop guessing how much wax your mould needs

A quick calculation guide for wax melt makers. Work out exactly what your mould holds, scale it to a full batch, factor in fragrance, and land on the number that really matters — your actual cost per saleable product. Calculate it once, record what actually happened, and make the next batch easier.

- 1.Work out what your mould actually holds — number of cavities, approximate weight per cavity, total capacity and how many moulds you're filling. Example: 8 cavities × 12g = 96g finished product.
- 2.Calculate the full batch size — multiply one mould's finished weight by the number of moulds, then add a small allowance for loss in the jug. Example: 96g × 5 moulds = 480g total.
- 3.Remember fragrance is part of the finished weight — e.g. 80g finished at 10% fragrance = 8g fragrance oil + 72g wax. Always check the IFRA maximum — it's the ceiling, not the target.
- 4.Track your actual yield — planned batch size vs. actual number produced, leftovers and wastage. That gap between expected and actual affects your real cost.
- 5.Check what each box actually costs you — wax and fragrance are only part of it; add packaging, product label, CLP label, box or bag and other genuine production costs to find your true cost per unit.
